The 70th thing. New blog?

I am now a PhD Student! Yay! :D Now I'm going to see if I can make \(Math\) stuff appear here. $$e^{i\pi}+1=0.$$

The 69th thing. A thought near midnight.

You know but a prick of a pin, and you think that's all the pain in the world.

The 68th thing. A memory.

My cousin and I used to hang out a lot when we were kids. He used to live in another city and we would play a lot of games whenever he would come over to visit. Naturally after playing the entire day, we would feel like having some snacks, so we would ask our mothers to either make something tasty for us, or for some money so that we could go to a shop nearby and buy something to eat. It so happened that one day we were given some money. We were excited at the thought of buying a blue Ruffle's Lays 20 rupees packet (now known popularly as Lays Magic Masala). The shop that we generally go to is maybe three or four hundred feet from where we lived. The road is lined with houses on either side. There is one particular house where the owners have a dog, and my cousin is extremely scared of dogs. The dog usually barks at everyone who walks by, and my cousin and I are used to it, so we find it easy to ignore it. That day though, as we were passing by, the dog was nowhere to be seen. The compound wall of the house is raised but not so high that we couldn't see the dog if we chose to walk up to it and peep inside. My cousin was curious as to where the dog was, but we decided to just walk by. All of a sudden, the dog sprang up, head sticking up and front paws on the wall, and was barking madly at us. I was startled. My cousin got scared out of his wits and turned tail and ran back towards our house as fast as he could. I called out to him to say that everything was alright, that the dog wasn't chasing us or anything. But he ran so fast, and kept running and didn't slow down. And then his shorts began to slip down!!!

There was a strange moment when my brain was parallelly: assimilating the fact that his shorts were actually slipping down, the mad desire to burst out laughing but also wondering if I should be concerned instead, predicting when he would stop to pull them back up, and calculating whether his underpants would fall off too. His shorts continued to slip. I burst out laughing. He didnt stop to pull them up; even when they were pooled around his ankles he waddled off as fast as he could. Thankfully his underpants didn't fall off.

The expression on my mother's face, when she came to the door, heard me roaring with laughter, saw my cousin pulling up his shorts with me nearly blind with tears of mirth, was priceless.

The 67 thing. Research

Today was supposed to be a holiday as it is Kanakadaasa Jayanthi. While the rest of my classmates (except my project mate Anjali) had two precious days off, tomorrow being a Sunday, I had to go to college to work on my project on graph theory. At first, I felt a little lethargic as I didn't know what we would be discussing about with my guide; I had barely enough time to complete my assignments and the like and reading the paper that I was assigned needed a lot of time at a stretch. It has cases and subcases and subsubcases and few of them aren't even explicitly mentioned.

We started off by clearing Anjali's doubts, which involved line graphs. I was completely disinterested in line graphs. Most of the graph theory that I've learnt in my second semester isn't something that I recall with fondness. While sir had asked me a while back to work on two problems, I hadn't gotten around to even thinking about it as I felt I had to finish reading the paper first to get an idea of what techniques I might have to apply. So after Anjali's doubt was cleared and she was asked to work on a problem, I was asked as to why the proof of a similar theorem fails in my case. I started to think about it. Sir said he would take a walk and get back. Anjali and I were in his cabin, and we decided to go to the first year MSc math class, which had just been cleaned. We then silently began working on our problems independently.

I started to apply the technique of a known theorem about a certain class of graphs to my problem: P3 union K2 free graphs, a super class of the class of graphs already dealt with. I found where the exact same technique would fail and was glad I could now answer sir's question. He still hadn't returned from his walk. I then began to see if I could still obtain an upper bound for the chromatic number of the graphs I was now dealing with in terms of maximum clique size omega. I found that with few minor changes, I could. But this left me with a doubt as I thought he said this problem was not solved. Then how could it have been solved so easily by me?

Sir then came back, and asked me to prove the theorem that we had previously discussed on the board. I did that as neatly and concisely as I could. I drew a vertical line to separate it from my next theorem (this I have picked up from Choudum sir's way of handling the board) and proceeded to prove how I can still apply the same technique to the new problem, with a few minor changes. To my surprise I was able to clear any questions that sir had, and then it seemed that what I had done actually could be right. Sir treated it like as it if was correct and proceeded to ask me the next question: chromatic bound for P5 free graphs in terms of omega. But I said, "So what about the one we proved just now, has it been solved before?". To which he replied, "I do not know if it has been solved, but if it has they might have just let it go as well, without publishing it". I didn't quite know what to make of that, as I was happy I was able to prove something that sir did not know was proved or not; I was happy regardless the fact that it might already be proved as I had done some genuine research now.

Sir then said that the P5 free problem had definitely not been solved, for many years that too, so solving this would be a real contribution to graph theory. He wanted to proceed in the same manner as before, but I spotted that we couldn't do that, as P5 was connected. We still tried going about in a similar manner, trying to partition the vertices in such a way that it was advantageous to us. We reached a certain point and got stuck, and sir pointed out that that was why few people add diamond free graphs as well as that is easier to deal with. We kept thinking about how to solve the problem but we were unable to get past that block. Sir then said that we can think about this later, and said that he had a feeling that it might be possible to solve the problem this way.

All in all, I felt really happy and excited. Doing research is fun! It started off being a little boring today, but it goes to show that if you ask the right questions and persevere, you never know when things can take a turn!

The 66th thing. Google is getting scary

The other day I opened my mail (I don't have to say gmail do I?) on my phone and found two tickets that my uncle had forwarded- my aunt from abroad was coming to visit us. I naturally checked the dates and times of arrival and departure and thought nothing of it. Until the day just before she was about to arrive. I swiped right on my phone from the home screen for Google Now to find me some interesting articles (called cards) to read (this is just based on what I search in Google Chrome so this wasn't anything special). But to my shock, I find details of a flight ticket, neatly telling me to which place the tickets were, the from and to airports, in how much time the departure was, the booking confirmation number, the name of the person in who's name the ticket was booked as well as where this information had come from and who had sent the email.

So Google was checking my mails??? It already registers few key words within the mail so that the advertisements can do their bit but this?? It felt like there was no more privacy anymore (wait, did I even have any privacy to begin with?) and I wondered if I could disable this from happening. But then, I don't have any vital information to hide to be honest, and the Google card had some pretty neat animations (if I looked closely, there was a tiny green plane that would move from one airport to the other, as if tracking the real time movements of the real plane).

I forgot about it after a while, only to find out some new feature of Google's today. I was checking the internet (do I have to say on Google Chrome) and looking for (do I have to say on Google search) for ways to help me write my summer internship report in LaTeX (such a PaIn-In-ThE-aSs) when I found an article that was helpful. I bookmarked it and was about to put it in the LaTeX bookmark folder, but Google beat me to it! It already knew I wanted to put it there and asked me if it should!

Isn't it scary how intelligent Google is getting? Or is already? Now they're testing their self driven cars on actual streets in California.

Pretty soon, if I want to meet my friend for a pizza this is going to happen: Google would read my WhatsApp messages and promptly book an Ola cab, or rather a self driven Google Smart Cab to pick me up. While the cab starts off, it would tell me of the optimum location to meet my friend (based on which Google Smart Cab picked her up) and told me of the best suitable pizzeria to meet (based on my Zomato reviews). It would then start a Google Hangout video chat with my friend so that we could decide on if we really wanted to visit that selected place or try another. Suitable options would pop all over some cool 3D display showing Google Maps while we made a decision. Then the Google Calender would pop up and remind me of an assignment due (I swear this will happen knowing Christ University) and instantly open Google Drive so I can work on the assignment. After I meet my friend and have a great time, its time to get into another Google Smart Cab, which would access any new photos I have on my phone and would ask if I wanted to upload any to Facebook.

All this assuming, of course, that Google has already bought out Whatsapp, Ola, Zomato and Facebook.

The 65th Thing. Wake up blog!

I'm typing this on my new laptop! :D A tiny 11.3 inch, 10 point display touch screen, 1.2kg, 4GB RAM, 500 GB HDD laptop with a core i3 processor. Helllllllooo new laptop! :P

FYI this is more of an update rather than any observation.

There have been a few interesting developments so far: Got an admit to Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago and (sigh) Stony Brooke University. Almost decided on the latter, but the financial situation at home made me opt out of it. Cleared JAM though, which was a surprise. Joined Christ University after a nearly tearful interview. Not that I almost cried, but the HOD and Smitha ma'am who interviewed me made me feel I won't get in no matter how good I am at math as I didn't have the proper background.

Joined Christ with a feeling that everything was going to be lame - the students, the teachers, the standards. I thought it was just going to be about what I can do in this period of two years. To my utter shock and surprise, I am NOT the topper here in terms of marks, there are others who are interested in research, one worked on something nearly identical to what I worked on at the IISc, at the IISc. How cool is that! And also one person is an Inspire fellow and receives a scholarship of 60,000 bucks per year :P

And the teachers! I was shocked to find that they are leaps and bounds better than the ones at BMS! I think when I joined Christ, the attitude of people around me ("Engineering to Mathematics? Why? Engg. is so much better..", "Are you sure you don't want to pursue an M.Tech instead?") made me feel that I was slipping a couple of rungs down the ladder than climbing up. Then it hit me BMS is NOT at the top of its field in the nation, but Christ is placed pretty highly, top 4 I think, in the country for science.

The exams!!!!! Test one's understanding more than (Tell me you loooooove meeee, if you don't then liiiieeeeeeee, ohhh liiiiiieeeeeeee to meeee.. Sorry, listening to True Love, Coldplay, Ghost Stories) one's mugging up capabilities. This is definitely moving up the ladder in my opinion. (Aaaaaahh, wooohooooo...) I am kicking myself for not utilizing the library. Seriously. Kick kick. Ouch. (Tantantantantantantan.. Wooohooooooo...) We have an AMAZING library. Its quiet, clean, has 4-5 floors, and absolutely the right environment that's perfectly conducive to learning.

Overall, extremely happy with my choice of staying here cuuuuuuz? Drumroll, WE'RE BUILDING A HOUSE! #1102, Aashraya , Vidhyaranyapura (Ooooooooooooohh aaaaaaaaah.. Midnight now, this song is sensational. Lie down, close your eyes, you'll feel like as though you're floating through the cosmos). Two floors, 5 bedrooms, 2 halls, 2 kitchens. The gruhapravesha (I hate saying house warming, what we cover the house with blankets and quilts?) is on the 2nd of November. (Deep voice, "Remember, remember, the 2nd of November")(And the world means nothin' toooo me, another's aaaaarms, another's aaaaarms, Oh oh ohooohhhh ohhhhhh). Really hoping it will go well. Right now I'm painting glass which will be fixed to the windows next to the main doors. Doing autumn leaves.

That's it for now, leaving with the hopes that if I write here after two years, I'm writing about my PhD thesis and how beautiful Europe is.

The 64th thing. Unexpected.

Sigh. Its been so long since I last wrote. So many things have happened. There were so many occasions when I'd think that I should write about it here but then I haven't. Today something really nice happened and inspired me to break the block!

First of all, I'm 23 years old now. Yes. Old. And teaching at BASE. Mils, Marz, Denzil and I decided to go out to Dominoes for lunch, and for some strange reason Marz got his guitar along. We ate well (buy one pizza get another free) and soon left for BASE. Marz was transferring a huge file to my phone via bluetooth and I suggested Denzil and Mils go back to the office. Marz then said that he wanted to play a song for me as a birthday gift! We went to the A building and sought out an empty classroom in the first floor.

He played and sang Temple of Thought by POTF and it was beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was grinning the whole time and my eyes got a bit teary! Oh it was aMAzing!!! Wanted to melt to a happy puddle :P Sigh!

Listening to the song again and again and again now. Wonderful day!

  then that feeling intensifies
and i come back again and look into the car
7:43 PM i fing two muslims there in the back seat with grim faces

and then says as to how i concluded those people were terroirsts
7:49 PM and i say
 me: lol
arpithaprasad: "Well they're in the middle of the road in a car with all windows drawn up. Its a hot day so its obviously unbearably hot in the car... what can people be doing there???"
7:50 PM and she says.. ".......Point"
"I'll send some people there don't worry"
by then i was convinced of the inefficiency of the government

The 62nd thing - Paranormal Activity

There's this stupid serial on ETV Kannada called "Aathma Kathegalu" which is basically about ghosts and devils and the like. It airs at 10 PM every weekday I guess. I'd have no problem if they kept their silly ghosts and devils and the like restricted to their slot. But no. They HAVE to show them in advertisements, which suddenly creep up on you when you're watching something else. And the scary thing is, there are actors acting out perfectly normal people - a guy driving a Hyundai i10 and minding his own business, an auto driver innocently making a living, all in the middle of the night of course. Which makes it realistic. I first of all do not like watching horror movies cuz my imagination goes haywire when I'm alone at night. So this is what happened one night:

I finished watching Grey's Anatomy at 11PM and my dinner as well. I switched on the light in the kitchen, dumped my plate in the sink, switched it off and walked back to the hall. I then switched off the light in the hall and I was in complete darkness. My parents were sleeping upstairs, and my grandparents in the room next to the hall, where their door was shut. Instead of heading upstairs as quickly as I could, I bravely opened my grandparents' door so that they'd have better ventilation. As soon as I did, the ticking of the clock in the hall behind me suddenly seemed louder to me, and I thought of footsteps behind me coming ever closer. And that's when I fled upstairs.

My mom was awake, and she saw me and said, "Oh, you haven't got water, have you?" I said, "I didn't know I was supposed to, isn't there any water here?", desperately hoping that she wouldn't make me go down and get it. She said there wasn't any and kept quiet. Thankfully, my mom isn't the sort who'd kick up a fuss. She didn't say anything for a while. Then, "Chinnu, could you pleease do me a favour?" Heart sinking, I said, "Do you want me to go get water?" "Yes please.." She must have been feeling really thirsty.

Armed with my mobile phone, I crept downstairs, switching on the flashlight on the phone to maximum brightness. It still felt like I was going to enter an unfamiliar dark pit. The thing about fear is that its unreasonable. I mean, no matter how many times I told myself not to get scared, my senses were heightened and my brain was translating every normal sound and sight to something paranormal. I quickly went to the light switch which is thankfully near the bottom of the stairs. I turned my back to the other end of the hall, dark and looming, and hit the light switch. The light didn't turn on.

My brain literally froze. I began to panic a little. And then there was this horrifying, unreal sound coming from the depths of the abyss that was the other end of the hall, "CrrrrRRRKKKKKKK" I did not know what that sound was. I was waiting for something to happen, and finally the light turned on. The light is right at the other end of the hall, so it wiped out the darkness. And then.

Then, the light flickered. And went out. A small part of my brain actually laughed and said, "God! Is this some movie or what!" The rest of my brain said, "Shut up! Ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod-". The light flickered on, again with that strange noise, which somehow sounded less loud in the light. And then it hit me. That noise was that weird noise of electricity. Like that noise you get when there's a loose connection. And that's why the light flickered.

The rest of it wasn't bad at all. I think that's cuz I was so badly shocked by the noise and the flickering that I was just off for a while. I switched on all lights that I possibly could, and fetched a bottle of water. It was slightly hard to switch off all the lights again, but after I did, I positively RAN for the stairs and up and went into my room.

The 61st thing - I See You :P

Wearing contact lenses for the first time now! Supposed to not wear specs on my brother's wedding so I had to purchase contact lenses :) I had this sorta training to learn to wear them. The optometrist had told me that I had to make sure I had half an hour to spare for training, and then I wondered why anyone would need half an hour!! I took more than 40 mins :P  The trainer first opened a test lens. The lens (the daily disposable one) is in a small plastic case that looks a bit like a large pill case. Its got a plastic cover that should be peeled off and a thin soft lens swimming in a transparent liquid is revealed. The trainer dipped his finger into the liquid and pulled out the lens. He said he'd show me how to use a liquid that comes with the lens as well (the daily disposables don't need to be treated with the liquid, but others do). He took a plastic bottle with a nozzle and poured some transparent liquid into his left palm and placed the lens in it. He pushed the lens about, making sure it got the liquid all over it. He said he's place it on my right eye first. Overcoming your reflex actions is hard. I kept blinking furiously once the lens so much as touched my eye. I was squeamish and he told me not to worry about it :P He made me look to one side, and then stuck the lens onto the white part of the eye ball and made me look left and right until the lens settled comfortably on the pupil. It burned slightly. I still kept blinking, my eye was trying to get the foreign body out. So it teared up slightly. The trainer said that to most people it waters a lot, and for me it was only slight. My vision was different and felt weird cuz the test lens had a power of -6, where as my right eye had a power of -1.75. So it felt like my vision got worse after wearing a lens. Then he asked me to look to one side again, pinched the lens and got it off. He made it seem quite easy. He then put it on to the left eye, which put up a bit of a fight. It blinked more, watered more. Even getting it off from the left eye was a little difficult. He put it on for both the eyes again and this time they seemed to keep jumping off after he put them on! He said, "Ad heg ri madthaidira? Namgu helkodi." It apparently didn't happen to others. Then it was my turn to try.

First of all, I had long nails and this made putting on the lenses and getting them off slightly difficult cuz I could've scratched my eye. I have long nails for my brother's wedding again! The things I'm doing for his wedding! Second, my hair kept getting in the way. The trainer suggested that I cut off the nail for the index finger at least. He looked at my key chain and said, "Hegidru nail cutter thandiralla," and I laughed :D I told him I usually didn't grow my nails but I had to do it for my brother's wedding. He looked very serious and said, "Yake? Jagla kaibeku antha na..," and I was so taken aback! I thought he was very serious and didn't understand how I would want to fight with my brother on his wedding! And he again said seriously, "Yaaranna parchbeku antha idira?". I laughed and said, "Illa nail polish yella haakbekanthe.. adakke.." So I tried to put it on to my right eye first. He taught me how to position my hands again. It was a bit hard but I got it done. Getting it off was much harder. I had to look to one side and push the lens off the pupil and then pinch the lens and get it off. Sliding was easy, pinching and getting it off was difficult due to the length of my nails. But I finally did it after a lot of trying. The trainer was very patient and sometimes used to talk to me about other things so I would be distracted from the discomfort while trying to pull the lens out.
The left again put up a fight. But I was glad when I could finally get them off my myself. I then put on my own lenses. The feeling of seeing without glasses was so exhilarating :P First thing different was when I had to put on my helmet. I instinctively wanted to pull out my glasses before I put on the helmet.

All in all, my eyes are feeling pretty ok now, still slightly uncomfortable, but manageable. I can wear daily disposables for an entire day and even sleep with them on for 3 hours max. I'm not able to read well though. Text is blurred. Apparently it happens and my eyes need to get used to the lenses and this would take about 4 to 5 days.

Today is Jerry's birthday! :D Nandini wants to invite us to her sister's wedding on Feb 1st so I need to go to college at around three. Trying to convince jerry to come too :)
*****
Just came back :) Met Nandini, Jerry, Shashank, Shishira, Karthik, Binds, Sarthak, Vijay, Rathan, Vishnu, Hareesh and Srinidhi (who forgot my name was Arpitha and thought I was Anushree and asked me what Arpitha was doing :P). It was nice seeing them again :) I took off my lenses, they were tiring my eyes out, and thought I'd take a picture of it:

The 60th thing. I'VE MISSED YOU

SO MUCH! IT'S BEEN AGES SINCE I'VE BEEN ABLE TO WRITE ANYTHING HERE! First I was really busy and even when I wanted to write something with the little free time I got, my web browser just wouldn't open the page! I recently reset the modem settings and now my wifi is called Rafa :D

There are so many things to say. I guess I should start with the earliest things that I can remember. Since it was April since the last time I wrote, the project work was on full swing then. We completed the MATLAB code for object detection and even got started on object recognition. We tried to port to the DM64something processor (god I can't believe I've forgotten, oh yeah! DM642!) so we got working on Simulink for that. Also I suddenly felt Meena ma'am was Shridhar sir's wife and got terribly excited about that but then she wasn't :P We'd even entered ourselves into a project competition and we realized how ill prepared we were. It was a shock that we deserved! And we even set out to write a paper regarding our project (where something truly disappointing happened). Few of the memorable times we've had was when we decided to take a temporary printout to Prof. Bhaktha and while coming back from the xerox shop to Gulduji's car, we got drenched from head to toe. Hated that wet feeling :( and after all that, we caught Prof. B just about to leave and he smiled awkwardly and said he didn't want to see us "coming and drenching" ;) so the next time we met him we were completely dry. I thought writing the report would be easy but it was absolutely painful. I was amazed at how sharp Prof. B's powers of observation were; he noticed tiny things that escaped us and I really liked that he was such a perfectionist. It was a pain and pleasure to comb through the report and try to make sure every letter and paragraph followed the rules. It was exhausting. I think that day we stayed in Anushree's house and tried to finish off the report and also the paper. We decided that Anushree would drop Supreeth and me to coll where I'd left my bike near McD, and then she would get back home. But we kept post-poning the time we had to leave. 8 PM turned to 9, when we forced Chunts to go home on her Hayabusa, to my disbelief 10, and finally to my utter disbelief 11 PM when we finally left her house. Sup drove the car till McD and that's when I took over the car and he rode my gaadi home. Something very strange happened when I was driving. The road I take after Srinivasa's cool corner was a small diversion from the main road and was completely dark. The car's headlights were the only sources of light. I had to slow down at a hump when I thought I saw something slither across to the middle of the road very quickly, and stop right there and look at the incoming car. I was stunned, as I drove right over the thing! Not on the creature but well the car's underbelly would've acted as a ceiling to that thing for a moment. And my imagination kicked in, and I wondered if that thing had intentionally slithered to the middle of the road when it saw the car, waited for the car to pass over it where it would somehow get hooked on to the car and sneak inside. I was a little tensed and thought I had to tell Gulduji about it as soon as I got back home. (I did days later when I remembered about it and she just laughed :P).

I remember when Chunts, Gulduji and I went to college in the morning with the intention of getting the report printed, and we met RH Ma'am who mentioned few formats to us, and we sat in classroom 104 in the classroom block. We still weren't done when it was four or six in the evening and Gulduji had to leave cuz of some errand, and Chunts and I stayed and I was surprised at her determination to see this thing through to the press (or rather the xerox shop). We then went to the xerox shop at around seven or seven thirty and stayed there till our first ever copy was printed. 8 P.M.

The 59th thing. To be or not to be.

Its becoming a growing concern for me that I'm becoming more and more feminine. Just today, Mom washed the front yard and asked me to erm.. 'put' the rangoli (for lack of a better kannada to english phrase translation). And I willing put the rangoli, much to the approval of my grandmother and the satisfaction of my mother (yes, Dad was right when he says my mother can look like a 'contented hen' about her children). Also, the ever slightly and steadily increasing excitement of wearing sarees (I told myself towards the end of my cousin's upanayana that I only wanted to wear the saree cuz my auntie so sweetly asked me to, but this time, that is for the farewell, I have no other explanation than the fact that I do want to wear a saree. Not only that, I've taken the initiative to go out there and buy a saree before any of my friends did! Usually, my friends are badgering me to put on a saree and I've always been disinterested). And also the fact that I've become more conscious of the fact that the adults around me are quite old and have begun to do tiny things that I usually never do (for instance, the time when I went to my Uncle's place, I almost unconsciously picked up everyone's empty tea cup and disposed of them in the kitchen sink. My Uncle was pleasantly surprised and commented that "putti" was growing up!).
I've always been proud of that fact that I'm not sickly feminine.. I'm not there yet and I hope right now to never be!

The 51st thing.

Tiny Tower. You might be missed. But I have a feeling you're the sole cause of every shitty thing that's been happening. Playing you for months to no end has taken so much of my time. Goodbye Tiny Tower.
